03: How much does care cost?

The answer depends on what sort of care is needed and for how long each day. If domiciliary care at home is needed – to prepare meals, and keep the home clean and the garden maintained for example, care can cost from a few pounds an hour for perhaps just a few hours every week.

If nursing care at home is needed, that is more expensive and it can make sense to shop around to get the best care at the best rates. Or, you may need accommodation too. A single room in a care home cost, on average, £675 a week in 2008/09 (source: Laing & Buisson) – that is around £35,000 a year – with costs varying considerably, while a shared room typically costs around 15% less.

Salaries and wages make up a high proportion of care costs, so fees generally rise faster than prices inflation.Last Updated
